Why is your residence tax so high? The deduction overseas remitters often miss

Community Q&A · General information, not tax advice

This comes up constantly in community groups for foreign residents in Japan: someone opens their residence tax (住民税) notice, sees a much bigger number than they expected, and asks — why is this so high? Very often, the honest answer is that they're not claiming a deduction they actually qualify for.

「なんで住民税がこんなに高いの?」という質問はコミュニティでよく見かけます。答えは、使えるはずの控除を使っていないことが多いです。

If you send money to family abroad, read this

If you financially support family members overseas — parents, siblings, a spouse, children — and you regularly send them money, you may be able to claim them as dependents (扶養控除) on your Japanese tax filing. That deduction reduces your taxable income, which lowers both your income tax and, the following year, your residence tax.

Why so many people miss it

The deduction isn't automatic. Your employer's payroll withholding won't apply it unless you've told them, and if you're filing your own return, it won't apply itself either. It has to be actively claimed, with documents that prove two things: that the person is genuinely your dependent (relationship), and that you're genuinely sending them money (remittance).

What you typically need
Proof of the family relationship (such as a birth certificate, marriage certificate, or family register extract) and proof of remittance (bank transfer records showing money sent to that person) — both need to be in a form the tax office or your employer's HR department can actually read, which for foreign-language documents usually means a certified Japanese translation.

This is exactly the kind of thing that's easy to overpay for years without realizing it — not because the system is hiding anything, but because nobody tells you the deduction exists until you happen to ask the right person, or see someone else's question answered in a Facebook group.
