Selling old gold jewelry in Japan: how buyers actually verify what it's worth

Community note · General information, not investment advice

Gold prices have been high for a while, and it's a common conversation in community groups: someone has an old ring, necklace, or pendant and wants to know if it's actually worth selling — and how to tell if a buyer's offer is fair. Here's what legitimate verification actually looks like.

金価格が高い今、古い指輪やネックレスを売るべきか、買取価格が妥当かという相談をよく見かけます。正規の鑑定方法を知っておくと安心です。

What a fair buyer actually checks

If someone offers to buy your gold without doing any of this — just eyeballing it and naming a number — that's worth being cautious about. A fair transaction usually involves at least one or two of these checks, done in front of you.

Good to know
Resale markups vary a lot depending on design, brand, and who's reselling — it's normal for a piece to be marked up well above raw spot price once craftsmanship and demand are factored in. That's a separate question from whether the purity was measured honestly in the first place.

Whether or not gold jewelry is a good place to put your savings is a personal financial decision, and not something we can advise on — but knowing how purity and weight are actually verified is useful information no matter which side of the transaction you're on.
